Robots are stronger, more consistent, and faster than human workers. They work without breaks, and robots produce more goods in a shorter amount of time. Also, machines don't make mistakes. This ensures a consistent quality product regardless of who is on the clock.

Robots rarely make mistakes and are more precise than human workers. They can produce a greater quantity in a short amount of time. They can work at a constant speed with no breaks, days off, or holiday time. They can perform applications with more repeatability than humans.

In this way, the two main ways that robots differ from us humans is that they cannot express emotions, or empathy. While emotions are essential to human existence, they often impair our sense of judgement and our rationality.

The concept of human thinking is still too vague to be accurately replicated in robots. Even then, multiple types of approaches could be taken to reach the ideal end result—enabling AI and robotic tools to think like humans.

And AI works at speeds well beyond those of human intelligence; a machine will outperform a human at most tasks that both have been trained to complete by many orders of magnitude.

Whatever the industry, it is obvious that robots can increase both efficiency and safety. They can work 24/7.

"AI, robots, and automation will never replace humans, but they do have the potential to make us far more effective, efficient, and productive than ever before in human history," Frey says. Edited excerpts: Q. The present and the future—how do you perceive the interplay between the two?

Speed. In most cases, robots are much faster than humans. In terms of actions that require extreme accuracy, for example when transcribing or comparing data, robots can be up to 10 times faster than humans.

The problem with automated processes is that their very nature precludes caring. A robot does not have an emotional function. Their logic driven nature and lack of ability to sympathise will mean that they won't deliver the sincere service that customers value.

The cost per hour, as mentioned above, can be much lower for robots than for human beings. Add to that the fact that robots can usually perform tasks much faster than humans. Productivity is likely to be much higher and the labor cost per task therefore much lower than with human workers.
