1. Civic Chorale lights up with colors of summer

The Tallahassee Civic Chorale presents its summer concert “We Sing Colors,” at 7:30 p.m. Friday, June 28, in the Turner Auditorium of the Tallahassee Community College.

All the songs feature colors such as Pink Panther, Blue Moon, and, of course, Over the Rainbow! The concert also highlights our members in solo and ensemble performances. Following the concert is an ice cream social. Tickets may be purchased in advance at civicchorale.org or at the door. Tickets are $13 for adults, $10, for seniors and non-TCC students, and free to TCC students and faculty/staff.

The Chorale offers beautiful music, camaraderie, and an opportunity to serve the community through its various civic activities. If you wish to join the fall 2024 season, go to singer registration at civicchorale.org.

2. Jazzy nights at Blue Tavern

Two Clever kicks off happy hour from 5-7 p.m. Friday, June 28, at Blue Tavern, 1206 N. Monroe St., followed at 8 p.m. by Seep & Sasha. Chris Seepersaud & Sasha Tuck perform jazz and other worlds realized through vocals and guitar. $10 cover.

Join the happy hour jam from 4-7 p.m. Saturday led by those cwazy wabbits of the Bunny Bread banditry. If you want to follow along the strange pathways through Celtic, Cajun and Canadian traditions, bring your instrument. The Jacob Wright Quintet, led by tenor sax player Jacob Wright, picks up the slack from 8-11 p.m. Cover is $10.

Road House, a staple around town for 31 years, gets the House rocking at 8 p.m. Friday, June 28. $12 at the door, 2011 S. Monroe St.

On Saturday, guitarist Maurice Mangum will be playing his Release Show at HOM on Saturday, June 29. By the time he takes the stage, he will have released 3 out of 6 songs from his 2024, self-titled EP, "Maurice." If you love Don Henley, John Paul White & all things songwriter, you'll be glad you came.

In support of Maurice, Tallahassee native, singer songwriter, Madison Avery, will kick off the night. Her music career began during her college years at Florida State University. With her first full length album in production, expected to release end of 2024, her music career has only just begun.

4. Pick up the Night Shift

Night Shift checks in for the evening shift from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Friday at the Great Oaks Pub at Southwood, 3750 Grove Park Drive. The group features keyboards, guitar, bass, drums, with Rick Christian, Bobby Jett, and Stan Gramling of Gramling’s feed store fame and Sparky. Last time the group appeared they packed the house. Call for reservations at 850-942-4653. No cover, full bar and restaurant.

5. Get ready to dance at Fire Betty's

Dress to boogie for a legendary Disco Party from 9 p.m.-midnight Friday at Fire Betty's, 1122 Thomasville Road. Dress for the occasion for the Disco Costume Contest. Winner gets $100 cash. The Groove Merchants are back at Fire Betty's with free live music starting at 8 p.m. Saturday, June 29.

It may not be Coney Island, but looking ahead to Fourth of July weekend, Fire Betty's is hosting its first Hot Dog Eating Contest. Prizes will be awarded.

Blue Tavern: John R. Butler plays Blue Tavern, 1206 N. Monroe St., from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday for happy hour, followed at 8 p.m. by Bluesday Tuesday with Land of the Giant Head. $5 cover. Donny Shrum & Michel Herbert lay down some enormous blues. Isabel Ruano plays 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, followed at 8 p.m. by Open Mic Night. Closed on July 4th.

Concert on the Radio: On Saturday, June 29, WFSQ-FM and WFSL-FM, the classical music stations of WFSU, will air the March 26, 2024, concert by the award-winning Galvin Cello Quartet. The broadcast is set for 8 p.m. WFSQ airs at 91.5 on the FM dial in Tallahassee, while WFSL, the Thomasville-based classical music station, occupies FM 90.7. Live streaming of both stations is available at wfsu.org.

Melons in the Park: The city of Marianna is putting on a festival called “Melons in the Park” and Tallahassee acoustic duo Hot Tamale will be entertaining from 9 a.m. till noon (Central Time) Saturday. It all happens at the Marianna Farmers Market on Madison St.

The Sound Bar: Old Porch Swing cranks up the tunes at 7 p.m. Friday at The Sound Bar, 1105 W. Tharpe St. $5 cover. Sat, June 29 Comedian Jerry Sola goes live at 7 p.m. Saturday, June 29.

Tallahassee Film Society: The film "Golden Years" a 2016 British comedy is being presented by Tallahassee Film Society at IMAX Challenger Learning Center at 7 p.m. Friday, June 28, and 5 p.m. Sunday, June 30. The film blends humor with social commentary, highlighting the struggles faced by the elderly and the injustices within the financial system. Tickets are $9 for TFS members, $11 for general admission.
