Hoosier Hysteria must come before the madness, and before March Madness takes over Indiana, the IHSAA boys basketball state tournament tips off with sectional play across the state.

Sophom*ore guard A.J. Dancler scored 19 points, and Southport shot 62% in beating Roncalli 57-38 in the first game of Class 4A Sectional 11 at Decatur Central.

The Cardinals (5-16) have won three of five after a 2-14 start. Keyon Miller, another sophom*ore guard, added 17 points. Southport advances to a Friday semifinal to face sectional favorite Ben Davis (12-11). Roncalli (8-14) finished the season on a seven-game losing streak. — David Woods

PIKE 51, PERRY MERIDIAN 49

Sophom*ore guard Devon Woods rattled in a go-ahead jump shot with 67 seconds left, and Pike overcome Jayden Taylor’s 28 points to beat Perry Meridian 51-49 in Class 4A Sectional 11 at Decatur Central.

The Falcons’ Izaiah Brinker missed a rushed 3-point attempt as time expired. Taylor, a Butler signee, was called for traveling – his seventh turnover – with 11 seconds left as Pike clung to a one-point lead. Perry Meridian (12-9) has not won a sectional game since 2010, the longest drought in Indiana’s Class 4A.

Pike (11-10) advanced to a Friday semifinal against Decatur Central (9-12). Eddie Jones scored 12 points and Ryan Conwell 10 for the Red Devils. Woods had seven points and four assists. — David Woods

For three quarters, the Cubs (7-15) heldWoodman star Rasheed Elemikan scoreless, but the senior forward scored his only two baskets of the game in the final period to help spark the defending sectional champions to a hard-fought one-point win over Franklin in the Whiteland Sectional opener. Greenwood led 15-9 at halftime, but the Cubs blitzed the Woodmen 13-4 in the third to take charge. Brock Kincaid of Greenwood and John Shepard of Franklin were the only players in double figures in the defensive struggle that was capped by Elemikan’s blocked shot with less than one second to play.

Tyler Cerny nailed two free throws in the final seconds to cap a determined comeback for the Trojans (12-6) in a hard-fought victory over the Flashes (9-13). Franklin Central led 10-6 after one quarter and still led 28-27 heading into the final period. But Tayven Jackson and Shane Bennett — CG’s lone double-figure scorers in the contest —had four points each to go with Cerny’s three free throws to rally to advance to a semifinal game against Shelbyville. Jackson, who had a career-high 29 points in the Trojans’ last game, continued his hot streak with a game-best 17.

In the New Castle Sectional opener, Gus Etchison poured in 30 points, including seven shots behind the 3-point arc, grabbed six rebounds and added three steals to a dominating individual effort to lift the Huskies (16-4) over the Tigers (14-8) to earn a shot at Muncie Burris in the semifinals. The victory pushed Heights to its fifth straight victory as the Huskies pursue their first sectional crown since 2015.

In the final minutes, Heritage Christian sophom*oreMyles Colvinput the exclamation point on a dominating performance by the Eagles’ boys basketball team on Tuesday night.

The 6-4 guard threw down a one-handed slam dunk that shook the rim and sent the crowd to its feet. Colvin was above the rim in that moment, and stood out above the competition the entire game.
