Diaper cakes are a stack of diapers that are formed in a way to look liketraditional cakes.Whether, it is a diaper cake for girls or a diaper cake for boys, diaper cakes can be an exciting centrepiece of any baby shower party. Trust me there is so much inspiration on how to give it the BEST and most creative look!

I’ve made this fancy diaper cake at so many baby showers for years and years. What was motivating each and every time, is the amount of compliments I’ve used to receive that made me decide to share with you how to make it; step by step.

I promise it will steal the show at any baby shower you will take it to.

what are the supplies for a diaper cake?

Supplies will depend on the type of decorations you want to have the diaper cake decorated with, for this version of diaper cake I used the following supplies:

For this version of the cake, plain white diapers would be my ultimate go to.I do not really prefer the patterned or colorful ones as it will be off point.

Any plain white diapers will work, I usedParent’s Choice Dry and Gentle Baby Diapers, Size 1, 50 Count.

How many diapers you need for a diaper cake?

Now layering is REAL!For this 2-tier diaper cake, I’ve used 28 diapers at the bottom tier and 14 diapers at the top tier.

2. paper towel tube

Tips, tips and more tips! Make sure to save the paper towel tube ahead of time to use it when you start the project.Otherwise, you will end up unrolling the paper towel to reach the tube, that happened with me before!

3. clear tape

I used Scotch Magic Tape, 1/2 in x 800 in, Clear.

I like using the clear tape to keep the diapers look steady and flat; it won’t show or damage the diapers, so later on, the mom is able to use them when she needs them. No wasting what-so-eva!

Note: any clear tape will do the job.

4. 6″ tulle rolls

For this version of girls diaper cake I used 3 tulle colors. Try to match the baby shower theme colors.
Here are the links to the tulle rolls I’ve used:

Pink Shiny Tulle

Lilac Shiny Tulle

Gold Shiny Tulle

5. ELASTIC rolls

We will use the elastic roll to make the tutu for the diaper cake. Who doesn’t love tutus, right?! There are different sizes for rolls that can be used depending on how you want the tutu to look like.

I used ¾” elastic roll.

You can also use 1/8” elastic roll if you want to make the tutu fluffy.

6. ribbon

I used Gold Glitter Ribbon – 7/8”

For these 2 reasons, a ribbon is a very important part of any diaper cake decoration:

  • Covers up all the tape wrapped around the diaper cake.
  • Gives the diaper cake the traditional cake look.

7. flower embellishment (paper FLOWERS)

Flower Embellishment

These beautiful flower embellishments added a 3-dimensional rich look to the diaper cake. After I used them the first time they became my go to for every diaper cake I made! You can however use any other option you find and like 🙂

8. center floral

I like to use the Hydrangea Florals on diaper cakes because it has lots of stems and small flowers that will give a dramatic look rather than just one big floral. Just pick the color that goes with the theme.

9. GLUE DOT OR DOUBLE FACE TAPE

We will need this to stick the flowers embellishment onto the diaper cake without damaging the diapers I do prefer the double-faced tape but I’ve also used the glue dot.

steps to make a diaper cake

Lining the diapers

Start by lining up the diapers, I used 28 diapers for the bottom tier and 14 diapers for the top tier. When you line the diapers up as shown in fig.1 and for a symmetrical look, make sure they are spaced evenly, then tape them together as shown in fig.2. This will also help when you start wrapping them around the paper towel tube.

wrapping the diapers around the paper towel tube

Start by the elastic side of the diapers then wrap the as shown infig.3. Taking too long? try a better way and seek someone’s help for holding the diapers with the paper towel tube so you can wrap the diapers evenly. In my situation there was no help so I thought “I think I can do it anyway”. Immediately, I started taping the beginning of the lined up taped diapers to the tube and began wrapping the diapers around. When you complete this step, and for a steady sit, tape the whole wrap together to keep it in place as shown infig.4You can then do the same with the second tier and cut the extra part of the paper towel as shown infig.5

making the tutu

Making the tutu, start by wrapping the elastic roll around the diaper cake to get the diameter of the tutu. You then need to sew the two ends of the elastic roll then put the sewed elastic band around the bottom tier of the diaper cake. As shown in fig. 6

I cut a good amount of the 3 colors tulle in 18 inches each before starting. Fold the cut tulle in half as shown in fig.7. I then inserted the folded part inside the elastic band and tied the tulle as shown in fig.8, repeat that part with the rest of the tulle pieces to finish the tutu. You need to create a pattern when adding the tulle. I used 2 pink, 2 lilac and 1 gold as shown in fig.9. You can create your own pattern too. After making the tutu, you need to take it out of the diaper cake and insert it again inside out. This will give the tutu a cleaner look as shown in fig. 10

Using the glue dot or the double-faced tape, start attaching the flower embellishment to the diaper cake. You can create any design you want; I added them all onto one side; you can be creative and create your own design too. They are so much fun to play with.

Add the 3D baby girl sticker or any sticker of your taste and choice and VOILA we are done!

In order for you to show the length of the tutu, you need to place this diaper cake on a tall cake stand.

Here’s to all those who are ready to try and diy!
