AP 2024 Election Results Live Update: As BJP sputters to reach half-way mark, allies TDP, JD(U) come into play

Nearly four hours after the counting of votes began, the ruling BJP – which had won 303 seats in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections – appeared to be struggling to reach the 240 mark. If the numbers hold, the BJP will have to ride on the coattails of its allies – particularly the TDP and JD(U) – to form the government.

AP 2024 Election Results Live Update: The election in a nutshell

The Telugu Desam Party-led alliance headed towards a comprehensive victory in the Assembly elections in Andhra Pradesh, leading in over 150 out of 175 seats. The party was also leading in 21 out of the 25 Lok Sabha seats in the state.

This is likely to bring TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu back as chief minister, just months after he was arrested by the Andhra Pradesh CID in connection with an alleged scam in the AP Skill Development Corporation during his last tenure.

His party’s performance in the Lok Sabha elections will also make him an important player nationally at a time when the BJP looks unlikely to cross the majority mark by itself for the Lok Sabha.

AP 2024 Election Results Live Update: Chandrababu Naidu, the kingmaker

Chandrababu Naidu, who contested the Lok Sabha polls and the Assembly polls in Andhra in alliance with the BJP and the Jana Sena party, has been a kingmaker on many occasions in the past.

In 1996, when the electorate delivered a fractured mandate in the Lok Sabha polls, Naidu, as the convenor of the United Front, a coalition of parties not aligned with either the Congress or the BJP, propped up the H D Deve Gowda government with outside support from the Congress.

He also helped form a government at the Centre with I K Gujaral at the helm during this period.

In 1999, Naidu contested the Lok Sabha polls in alliance with the BJP and notched up 29 seats in united Andhra Pradesh. He supported the then Atal Bihari Vajpayee government which was short of majority mark. In fact, with 29 seats, TDP was BJP’s biggest ally although it did not join the government.

In 2014 too, Naidu contested in alliance with the BJP and joined the Modi government, only to leave the alliance in 2018 ahead of Assembly polls in Andhra Pradesh. Read More

AP 2024 Election Results Live Update: Naidu and Nitish: Men of the Moment as BJP fights to make 272 on its own

With the BJP likely to fall behind the majority mark, the formation of a new Narendra Modi government will now depend on the support of two veteran kingmakers — the Telugu Desam Party or TDP’s Chandrababu Naidu and Janata Dal (United) or JD(U)’s Nitish Kumar, both partners of the BJP in the NDA.

According totrends released by the Election Commission of India (ECI),at 4.15 pm, theBJPwas leading or had won on 244 seats, almost 30 seats short of the majority mark of 272. The TDP was leading or had won on 16 seats, all inAndhra Pradesh, and the JD(U) was leading or had won at 14 seats, all in Bihar.

If these numbers do not change significantly, Naidu and Nitish could be the men who would prop upNarendra Modiin New Delhi.

AP 2024 Election Results Live Update:What challenges will Chandrababu Naidu have to face now that he has won?

It seems like Naidu and his TDP party have their work cut out for them now that they have regained power in Andhra Pradesh. The first big hurdle would be convincing their coalition partner, the BJP at the central level, to grant the state the much-promised "special status" - something the rival YSRCP party has yet to deliver on.

But that's just the tip of the iceberg. Naidu and his team would also have to tackle the state's massive fiscal woes. We're talking a staggering debt of over Rs 13.50 lakh crore, which translates to a burden of Rs 7 lakh per family and Rs 2 lakh per individual! The current administration has struggled to manage the finances, made even more challenging by the TDP's promises of generous freebies and subsidies.

From complimentary bus travel for women to three free cooking gas cylinders per year and Rs 20,000 in annual support for farmers, the list of commitments goes on. And that's not all - the party's manifesto also outlines plans for old-age pensions, support for the physically challenged and backward classes, and free power for weavers.

Clearly, Naidu and his team have their work cut out for them. Balancing the state's books and delivering on all these promises will be a herculean task, to say the least.

Andhra Pradesh Results 2024 Live: Jagan: A battle for political survival after rout

From a brutal majority to a virtual battle for survival. YS Jagan Mohan Reddy's electoral fortunes seem to have plummeted to unexpected depths within a span of five years, during which the outgoing Chief Minister launched a slew of populist measures.

Having floated his YSRCP in 2011 following the death of his father and charismatic late Chief Minister of the undivided Andhra Pradesh, YS Rajasekhar Reddy, Reddy had to wait for another eight years before getting into the ruling saddle.

Born on December 21, 1972 at Jammalamadugu in Kadapa district, Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy first entered electoral politics in 2009 to contest for the Kadapa Lok Sabha seat from the Congress party. He emerged victorious under the leadership of his father Rajasekhar Reddy but that joy was short-lived.

In an unfortunate turn of events, Rajasekhar Reddy succumbed in a helicopter accident on September 2, 2009, which dumped his son into the abyss of political vagaries.

Aiming to cash in on the legacy of his father through padayatras (marathon political walkathons), which were being hindered by the Congress high command, led Jagan Mohan Reddy to cut ties with the national party to form his own Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) on March 12, 2011. However, the political vagaries were so intense that they led to his arrest for 16 long months on corruption charges.

On being released from the Chanchalguda prison on September 24, 2013 Jagan Mohan Reddy straightaway dived into electoral politics but failed to capture power narrowly in the 2014 polls, under the bleak shadow cast by the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh.

TDP in alliance with BJP and outside support from Janasena emerged victorious, compelling the YSRCP chief to slog it out for another five years to taste victory in 2019 polls, which was a landslide, enabling him to bag 151 Assembly and 22 Lok Sabha seats.

Through his hundreds of kilometres of padayatras across the length and breadth of the southern state over the years leading up to 2019 polls, Jagan Mohan Reddy had struck a chord with the masses.

Following five years of welfare-centric governance, Jagan Mohan Reddy again fought against the NDA alliance of TDP, BJP and Janasena in the 2024 polls.

Besides political opponents, he also had to deal with the opposition and adverse campaigning which emanated from his family members such as Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president and sister Y S Sharmila and cousin Suneetha Narreddy.

In this backdrop, Jagan Mohan Reddy could not manage another win for his party in the hustings, as it was headed for a virtual rout, as per the latest EC updates.

AP Results 2024 Live: Naidu overcomes electoral defeat, arrest to script a new chapter for TDP

Five years after suffering a humiliating defeat at the hands of a much younger Jagan Mohan Reddy, TDP supremo N Chandrababu Naidu on Tuesday was on course to lead his party towards a landslide victory in the Andhra Pradesh assembly polls, with allies BJP and Janasena Party (JNP) in tow. PTI

Naidu's latest electoral triumph, where his Telugu Desam Party was ahead in 130 of the 175 seats as per latest figures, comes months after his arrest in an alleged corruption case. In the outgoing House, TDP has 23 members.

TDP put up a good show in the Lok Sabha polls as well, leading in 16 of the total 25 seats, with allies BJP and JNP ahead in three and two segments, respectively.

Born on April 20, 1950 at Naravaripalli in undivided Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh, Nara Chandrababu Naidu started his more than four-decade long political career on the student politics platform at Sri Venkateswara University in Tirupati. Following that solid foundation, Naidu (74) joined the Congress party and went on to become a cabinet minister. However, he later jumped ship to the TDP founded by his late father-in-law and legendary actor N T Rama Rao.

Naidu first ascended the chief minister's chair in 1995 and went on to become a three-time CM. His first two terms as CM came during the era of united Andhra Pradesh, beginning from 1995 and ending in 2004, nine years at a stretch while the third term came post bifurcation of the united state. Telangana was carved out of Andhra Pradesh 10 years ago.

As the CM of erstwhile undivided state, he emerged as the chief architect of modern Hyderabad, playing a key role in developing the hi-tech city and turning it into a major hub. During the late 90s, Naidu played a key role in forming the Central Government of that time and the first NDA government formed by Atal Bihari Vajpayee was supported from outside by the TDP.

In 2014, Naidu emerged as the first chief minister of the residuary state of Andhra Pradesh and served it until 2019.

In his third-term as CM, he championed Amaravati to be the capital city of the southern state but losing power left his brainchild as an unfulfilled promise, especially after his successor and YSRCP supremo Jagan Mohan Reddy dealt a debilitating blow to Amaravati.

Moreover, Naidu's arrest in 2023 under the Skill Development Corporation Scam case by the YSRCP government was the lowest point in his career. After a pre-dawn arrest on September 9, Naidu spent nearly two months in the Rajamahendravaram central jail.

However, an interim bail on October 31, which was made absolute on November 20 set Naidu free to prepare for the 2024 polls, enabling him to join the NDA alliance of TDP, BJP and Janasena.

AP Results 2024 Live: 'Now, over to them': AAP leader Saurabh Bharadwaj to TDP, JD(U) as BJP staggers to majority

As the BJP appeared to fall short of a majority, Aam Aadmi Party leader Saurabh Bharadwaj on Tuesday said the ball was now in the court of NDA allies N Chandrababu Naidu's TDP and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's JD(U) who once united the opposition against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) was leading on 16 seats in Andhra Pradesh while the Janata Dal (United) was leading on 14 seats, as per the initial trends shown on the Election Commission of India's website.

Taking to his social media handle on X, Bharadwaj reposed his faith in the TDP and JD(U) leadership to prevent the BJP from forming its government.

"Interesting facts - In 2019, Mr. Chandrababu Naidu visited all opposition leaders to unite them against Modi, and in 2024 Mr Nitish Kumar visited all opposition leaders to unite them against Modi. Now, over to them," he wrote alongside a picture of the two leaders shaking hands.

Andhra Pradesh Results 2024 Live: Jagan Mohan Reddy-led YSRCP headed for a complete rout

The welfare government of YSRCP led by YS Jagan Mohan Reddy was headed for a complete rout as the TDP-led alliance was leading in over 150 of the 175 Assembly seats and 21 of the 25 Lok Sabha seats in the state. It is a reversal of the 2019 verdict when the YSRCP won a landslide with 151 seats, while the TDP won just 23 and Jana Sena Party won just one seat.

The TDP is leading in 128 seats, the BJP is leading in six of the 10 seats it contested and JSP in 19 of the 21 seats it contested. The YSRCP was leading in 20 seats with almost all its ministers trailing and only Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy and his senior colleague Botcha Satyanayarana were leading in Pulivendula and Cheepuripalle respectively. TDP supremo N Chandrababu Naidu was leading in Kuppam while JSP chief K PAwan Kalyan was leading in Pithapuram Assembly seat.

The dejected YSRCP ministers and candidates are leaving the counting centres, disappointed by the leads by rival party candidates. The YSRCP headquarters at Tadepalle wore a deserted look as shocked supporters of Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy slowly left the place. The electoral map of Andhra Pradesh which was marked by a sea of blue of the YSRCP which won 151 seats in 2019 has turned into a platter of yellow, saffron and red of TDP, BJP and JSP. Except in the undivided Prakasam district where the YSRCP was leading in eight of the 12 assembly seats, the TDP was dominating in all the remaining districts including the 34 seats in combined districts of East Godavari and West Godavari, and 52 seats in the Rayalaseema region. TDP, BJP and Jana Sena Party cadre and supporters have started bursting crackers and celebrating across the state in anticipation of a huge victory. While initial trends indicated a fight between YSRCP and TDP in rural constituencies, the tide turned slowly in favour of the TDP-led alliance as the counting progressed.

Dejected YSRCP candidates and supporters said that Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy’s over dependence of welfare schemes alone has brought it down, while political observers indicated that the arrest of N Chandrababu Naidu, the lack of development in the state with no new projects or industries coming during the YSRCP regime, and a general dissent towards elected YSRCP representatives worked against the party. In spite of Jagan changing or dropping several candidates, the people of the state appear to have rejected the government which was only implementing welfare schemes while neglecting issues like unemployment, rising prices, lack of clarity on the state capital, and lackassidical attitude of local elected representatives of the ruling YSRCP over governance issues.

The shock to YSRCP is similar to the one in Telangana where the BRS suffered a defeat last November, sending a reminder that welfare schemes alone do not win elections. While the TDP and JSP were strengthening their grassroots and were trying to bring down the YSRCP which seemed to be on a strong ground until the elections were announced in March, the equations joined as BJP joined the alliance just as the elections were announced. Although, things changed a bit in favour of TDP with the arrest of Naidu on September 9 last year by the AP CID in connection with an alleged scam in the AP Skill Development Corporation that occurred during the Telugu Desam Party’s regime from 20014 to 2019, which many voters feel was unfair and highhandedness of Jagan, the TDP-JSP combine were still trying hard counter the YSRCP.

AP BJP president D Purandeswari from Rajahmundry Parliament seat, and BJP candidates C M Ramesh and B R Srinivasa Varma from Anakapalle and Narasampuram were also headed for big wins.

Madhavi Latha, a 49-year-old Bharatanatyam exponent and former NCC cadet, had generated hopes for the BJP in the Hyderabad Lok Sabha constituency. Latha, who has worked extensively among Muslim communities and is close to the RSS, had campaigned against triple talaq in the minority-dominated areas of Hyderabad.

However, her campaign was marred by controversy after a video surfaced on April 17, purportedly showing her symbolically shooting an arrow towards a mosque during a Sri Rama Navami rally. Latha later apologized, claiming the video was incomplete.

Despite her efforts, the communally-charged atmosphere and hate comments during the campaign seemed to have impacted her performance. After several rounds of counting, the incumbent AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi was comfortably leading in all seven assembly segments under the Hyderabad Lok Sabha seat, including Malakpet, Goshamahal, Karwan, Charminar, Chandrayangutta, Yakutpura and Barkatpura.

AP Election Results 2024 Live: A recap of what has happened so far

In the counting of postal ballots, TDP's Buchchiah Chaudhray established a slender lead in Rajahmundry Rural Assembly constituency, while YSRCP is leading in Ramachandrapuram assembly seat.

Chief minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy went to the polls alone on the strength of the numerous welfare schemes that he had launched and said that over 80 per cent of the state’s population had benefited from them, while the main Opposition the Telugu Desam Party has allied with the Jana Sena Party and the BJP.

The TDP was nowhere in the picture till a year before the election, and was struggling to retain its diminishing political space. It changed a bit after N Chandrababu Naidu was arrested on September 9 last year by the AP CID in connection with an alleged scam in the AP Skill Development Corporation that occurred during the Telugu Desam Party’s regime from 20014 to 2019. He was granted interim bail on October 31, 53 days later, and on November 20 the HC granted him regular bail. Not only did it garner sympathy for the former CM but it also galvanized actor-turned-politician and chief of Jana Sena PArty K PAwan Kalyan to declare his support and an electoral tie-up with TDP. Naidu and Kalyan then negotiated with the BJP to join the alliance which it did in March just two months before the elections. The TDP-JSP-BJP (NDA) contested on the platform that Jagan had ruined the state with the cash heavy welfare schemes and had driven the state into debts. The issues of the state not having a proper capital city, lack of development or industrial investments, and unemployment were also issues that TDP and JSP raised. The results of Assembly constituencies of Kovvur in East Godavari and Narasapuram in West Godavari district will be declared first as they have less than 20 rounds of counting.

Results of Lok sabha seats of Rajahmundry and Narasapuram are expected to come in early.

In 2019, the TDP suffered a shocking defeat, winning only 23 Assembly seats and three Lok Sabha seats. There was severe anti-incumbency against YSRCP ministers and MLAs but Jagan tackled it by dropping many candidates or shifting them to other constituencies.

AP Election Results 2024 Live: Can postal ballots affect the results?

The 2019 Andhra Pradesh Assembly elections saw 2.39 lakh postal ballots being cast. The average number of postal ballots per constituency added up to around 1,300 votes. However, since the YSRCP started “decentralised governance” through village and ward-levelsachivalayams(secretariats), the number of government employees, who form the major chunk of the voters eligible for postal ballots, has seen a rise.

In the recently-concluded polls, an estimated 5.3 lakh people were eligible to vote through postal ballots, taking the average to around 4,000 per constituency.

In the 2019 polls, the YSRCP won around 15 Assembly seats with a margin of around 4,000 votes. “The election is much closer than it was in 2019. The seats where we narrowly won could switch if all the postal ballots are counted. This is a cause of concern for us,” a YSRCP leader in Vijayawada said.

The leader added that postal ballots could play a key role in deciding the outcome in seats like Vizianagaram, Nellore Rural, Srikakulam and Gudur. Read more
